18 Years of Greening Community: Growing A Greener Phuket Together
21 September 2026, Phuket – One tree can make a difference. Thousands, planted together over 18 years, can help create something much greater: greener communities, stronger connections and a lasting commitment to Phuket’s environment. This year, Laguna Phuket marked the 18th edition of its Greening Community initiative, bringing together more than 120 participants, including associates, children from SILK, and officers from Bang Jo Temporary Prison, for a tree-planting activity at the Bang Jo Temporary Prison Community in Thalang District, Phuket. Together, participants planted 102 trees, helping to expand green spaces while bringing people from different backgrounds together around a shared environmental goal.
Since Laguna Phuket launched the initiative in 2007, Greening Community has brought together associates, students, local organisations and community partners through tree planting and environmental conservation activities across Phuket and Phang Nga. Over the past 18 years, more than 35,698 mangrove seedlings and trees have been planted, with more than 2,670 participants contributing their time and effort to restoring natural areas and creating greener spaces. Beyond these numbers, the initiative has helped build greater awareness of the importance of trees and natural ecosystems. Each planting activity provides an opportunity for participants to connect with nature, engage with local communities and see how individual contributions can support wider environmental goals.
For Laguna Phuket, Greening Community is one of the ways of translating its broader sustainability ambitions into meaningful action, while encouraging associates, young people, local organisations and community partners to play an active role in creating a more sustainable future. The involvement of SILK children adds another important dimension. By participating in hands-on environmental activities, they can experience sustainability beyond the classroom and see how their actions can make a tangible difference to the communities around them. These experiences also help young people understand the value of caring for the environment, working together and taking responsibility for the places, they call home. In this way, the initiative helps nurture environmental awareness from one generation to the next.
Greening community forms part of Laguna Phuket’s wider commitment to environmental conservation and community wellbeing. Across the destination, initiatives focused on conservation, climate action, education, and community engagement contribute to a broader approach to responsible tourism – one that recognises that the long-term success of a destination is closely connected to the health of its environment and the wellbeing of its local communities. After 18 years, Greening Community is a reminder that meaningful environmental progress is built through consistency. A single tree cannot solve a global environmental challenge, but continued action can create lasting impact. The 102 newly planted trees at Bang Jo will continue to grow long after the participants have returned home, providing shade, supporting local biodiversity and becoming part of the community’s landscape.
