Ho
Kwon Ping, Chairman of Banyan Tree Holdings and Laguna Resorts
& Hotels, initiated the humanitarian relief effort by
personally delivering a donation of clothing and food supplies
to 67 displaced local families seeking refuge at the near
by Bangtao Mosque. These, now homeless, families are all that
remains of the fishing village that had been located at the
southern end of Laguna's Bangtao Beach, which had no chance
of withstanding the tsunami's force. Several truck loads of
donated food, clothing, linens, shoes, toiletries and medical
supplies were also delivered to a number of locations, including
Khao Lak, in Phang Nga province.
Besides donations from well wishers, associations, companies and suchlike, the Fund will include contributions from the following sources: |

Company Contribution
The five Laguna hotels cancelled their New Year's Eve fireworks
and donated the savings as seed money for the Fund. New Year gifts,
and other company celebrations and activities, including Laguna's
annual Children's Day Fun Fair scheduled for 8 January, were cancelled
and the money budgeted for these activities has been redirected
into the Fund.
Staff Contribution
Laguna's 3000 staff were asked to voluntarily donate 5%
of their January salaries to the Fund, and every baht donated by
staff has been matched by Laguna Resorts & Hotels .
The
management of Laguna Phuket is also identifying community clean
up and recovery projects to donate human resources to, if staff
members wish to participate.
Staff with appropriate skills who wish to volunteer to contribute to approved projects in affected areas will be supported through paid leave. The volunteer staff's expenses for such activities will be paid for from the Fund. Guest Contribution
Immediately after the tsunami, guests volunteered willingly
to help in the cleaning of the beach, together with the hotel staff.
Guests will also have the opportunity to contribute if they so desire
by adding US$2 per night to their room account, which will again
be matched by the owning company, LRH.
