“Team Laguna” Charity Fundraising at the 2008 Laguna Phuket International Marathon
The 2008 Laguna Phuket International Marathon is set to run with 3350 athletes already registered as of 30 May 2008. Local runners from Phuket and nearby provinces are expected to register at the expo taking place during the two days prior to the event, bringing the expected number of athletes at this year’s event to over 5000.
The 3350 registered athletes can be divided into 700 athletes in the 42k Marathon, 900 in the 21k Half-Marathon, 650 in the 10.5k Run, 600 in the 5k Walk and 500 in the 2k Kids’ Run.
Athletes from Thailand are the largest group at this year’s event, with 1263 athletes already registered. Race organizers expect more Thais to register during the two-day expo prior to race day, bringing this number to over 2000. There are also 248 Singaporeans, 203 Japanese, 147 Malaysians, 100 from Hong Kong and 152 from the UK.
The 5k Walk, which was first introduced at last year’s event, has also received increasing interest from local clubs and organizations. Participants in the 5k Walk will be wearing their club or company colours, not only to demonstrate support for their club/organization and their community spirit, but to also raise funds for charity. “Team Laguna” leads the pack with 180 registered participants. Other organisations already registered include 102 participants from The Sarojin, 39 from The Chedi, 29 from Asia Web Direct, 25 from Le Meridien Phuket Resort and 17 from Trisara.
In keeping with the Laguna Phuket International Marathon’s ethos which encourages participants to take part in donating to charity, the 180 “Team Laguna” members have pledged to raise money for Ban Klong Sai school, the first in a series of projects Laguna Phuket has planned to help schools in need in remote areas of Phuket, Phang-nga and Krabi provinces.
Participants of the 2008 Laguna Phuket International Marathon are invited to join “Team Laguna” in their charity fundraising efforts during the event. Proceeds raised will go towards helping to provide better facilities so as to improve health and safety standards at Ban Klong Sai school in Phang-nga province. Those wanting to contribute to Team Laguna’s donation can choose to pledge to raise a certain amount of money for this cause as they participate in any of the races on race day, or to make donations at donations boxes at Laguna Phuket hotels or at the Laguna Phuket booth at the Marathon expo during 13-14 June at Layan Room, Laguna Beach Resort.
