New Chapter in Laguna Phuket Charity Fund-Raising Marks 25th Anniversary
“Fully Booked” Schools Project Boosted by THB 1Million Donation
Laguna Phuket is celebrating its 25th Anniversary by opening a new chapter in its charity fund-raising endeavours - the “Fully Booked” project aimed at collecting THB 2 million to operate a mobile library and learning centre for local school children.
It’s the latest and most ambitious project in Laguna Phuket’s on-going Developing Sustainable Schools Programme that has benefited hundreds of schoolchildren in Phuket and neighbouring provinces.
Housed in a custom-built vehicle, the Fully Booked mobile centre will be stocked with educational books and staffed by student teachers from Rajabhat University, who will teach literacy courses as well as lessons on healthy living.
It will also be equipped with computers and multimedia equipment to give children access to technology and web-based learning materials.
The Fully Booked project is a collaboration between Laguna Phuket and Phuket Rajabhat University that aims to provide alternative learning resources for children from kindergarten to primary school ages and their teachers in rural areas of Phuket and Phang Nga provinces for a five-year period beginning in the 2013 academic year.
Laguna Phuket has pledged THB 1 million to Fully Booked to mark its 25th Anniversary - and hundreds of invited guests at Anniversary celebration were asked to boost the project by donating cash and buying books to stock the mobile library.
Fully Booked was officially launched in June at the Laguna Phuket International Marathon (LPIM) by its Charity Ambassador Miss Thailand World 2012 Vanessa “Na Chatra” Muangkod - and since then around THB 175,000 has been raised for the project from LPIM and other Laguna Phuket events.
Laguna Phuket has a long tradition of charity fund raising to benefit its local communities. In previous years, athletes from Thailand and all over the world have raised millions of baht to fund several school rebuilding programmes through LPIM, Laguna Phuket Triathlon (LPT) and Ironman 70.3 Laguna Phuket.
Last year, an unprecedented THB 1.2 million was raised by LPT and Ironman 70.3 Laguna Phuket triathletes for Laguna's Survival Swim programme, which has now taught nearly 800 local school children vital deep water survival skills with hundreds more due for lessons.
Laguna Phuket has fundraised more than 1 million baht over the past 15 years to support local sea turtle release research programs.
