Miss Thailand 2012 Opens New Chapter for Laguna Phuket Fundraising

Athletes Asked to Support “Fully Booked” Schools Project

Athletes booking their slots in Laguna Phuket’s 2012 marathon and triathlon series are being asked to raise funds through donations and sponsorships for the resort’s latest community initiative - the “Fully Booked” project - aimed at collecting THB 2 million to operate a mobile library and learning centre for local school children.

The Fully Booked project was launched on Wednesday 16 May in Bangkok by Miss Thailand World Vanessa “Na Chatra” Muangkod, newly-appointed Charity Ambassador of the Laguna Phuket International Marathon (LPIM), which will be held on Sunday 10 June.

It’s the latest and most ambitious project in Laguna Phuket’s on-going Developing Sustainable Schools programme that has benefited hundreds of schoolchildren in Phuket and neighbouring provinces.

In previous years, athletes from Thailand and all over the world in LPIM, the Laguna Phuket Triathlon and Ironman 70.3 have raised thousands of baht to fund several school rebuilding programmes.

Last year, an unprecedented THB 1.2 million was raised by triathletes for Laguna's Survival Swim programme, which has now taught some 500 local school children vital deep water survival skills with another 2,000 due for lessons.

The Fully Booked project - a collaboration between Laguna Phuket and Phuket Rajabhat University -  aims to provide alternative learning resources for children from kindergarten to primary school ages and their teachers in rural areas of Phuket and Phang Nga provinces for a five-year period beginning in the 2013 academic year.

Housed in a custom-built van, the mobile centre will be stocked with educational books and staffed by student teachers from Rajabhat University, who will teach literacy courses as well as lessons on healthy living.

It will also be equipped with computers and multimedia equipment to give children access to technology and web-based learning materials

As a native of Phuket, Vanessa “Na Chatra” Muangkodis particularly pleased to be spearheading an initiative that will benefit children of the island and Phang Nga.

“I’m delighted to be Charity Ambassador of the 2012 Laguna Phuket International Marathon and thrilled to be involved in such an inspiring project,” she said.

Vanessa, aged 20, who won her title in March and goes on to represent Thailand this August at the Miss World 2012 finals in China, will be at LPIM – dubbed “Run Paradise” - on 10 June to lead local children on the 91.5FM 5km Walk.

Debbie Dionysius, Laguna Phuket Assistant Vice President Destination Marketing, said: “We’re all very excited at having such a fantastic ambassador to launch and lead this worthy project.

“Raising money for a mobile centre that will teach literacy and a variety of educational courses is a great way for our thousands of athletes from all over the world to leave a positive impact on Phuket.”

Runners can register for the event on the LPIM website

Similar fund raising continues with athletes registering for the Laguna Phuket Triathlon on 25 November at www.lagunaphukettriathlon.comand the Ironman 70.3 on 2 December at

And the person who raises the most funds will win a holiday at Laguna Phuket.
