New Venue Makes Memorable Festival Debut
“Nothing to Sing the Blues About” at Laguna Phuket
Amidst all the local and international musical highlights of the seventh Phuket International Blues Rock Festival was a top-of-the-bill performance from Laguna Phuket, making its debut as venue of the renowned event.
The luxury destination resort on Phuket’s northwest coast drew more than 1,800 music fans over two nights to a purpose-built marquee stage and hospitality complex overlooking one of its shimmering lagoons.
Headline act Chris Thomas King of the US expressed it best when he told the crowd: “If I lived here I’d have nothing to sing the blues about.”
The three-time Grammy award-winning artist’s storming hour-long set ended a fascinating feast of musical talent that included rising Irish female star Grainne Duffy; Festival returns John Meyer’s Blues Express from Australia; Clas Yngstrom’s Sky High of Sweden; Akasha, the Malaysian eight-strong world fusion music outfit, and many more.
Local talent was well represented with sets from Thailand’s Santana tribute band Token led by brilliant guitarist ‘Khun Teung’; The Colin Hill Band of Phuket featuring local legends PJae Stanley and Jimmy Fame, and Phuket Town blues bar favourites The Rockin’ Angels.
The Festival on Friday 24 and Saturday 25 February was presented by 91.FM Phuket Island Radio, which recorded all the acts for future broadcasts and staged a live internet broadcast of the headline performances on Saturday night.
There was also a strong local community element, with THB 50,000 raised for the educational fund of Patong Rotary Club and a further THB 50,000 collected for Bang Tao School.
Festival organiser and founder Andy Andersen said: “This was our most successful Festival ever and a major part of the success was the new venue. All the artists had nothing but praise for Laguna Phuket and all the arrangements – we feel the Festival has reached a new level of recognition.”
Laguna Holiday Club is part of the Laguna Phuket Destination Resort.
