Launch a Young Sea Turtle on its Lifetime Ocean Odyssey

Media Release
23-Feb-2012

Experience the wonder of releasing a young sea turtle into the sunset waters of the Andaman Sea to begin its lifetime ocean odyssey at Laguna Phuket’s annual sea turtle release on Thursday, 8 March at the Angsana Laguna Phuket beachfront.

One hundred young green sea turtles will be released during the beach ceremony, part of Laguna Phuket’s on-going environmental partnership with Phuket Marine Biological Centre to help the plight of endangered sea turtles.

Two of the turtles will be equipped with satellite tracking devices for a research programme being conducted by the Centre.

Green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas) can live for up to 60 years and spend their lives roaming the world’s oceans. Only the females ever come ashore again to nest.

Tickets for one turtle release, which cost THB 2,000 and include two welcome drinks, will be on sale at all Laguna Phuket hotels from 1 March onwards.

The ceremony is open to all and the whole occasion begins at 2.00pm on the beach when event-goers can buy commemorative T-shirts, enjoy bag painting and cake decorating, and try their luck at a raffle booth.

All proceeds go to the Phuket Marine Biological Centre and the 3rd Area Naval Command, Royal Thai Navy, for ongoing turtle conservation programmes.
