Splashing Time for Youngsters in Tritons' Water Safety Session
Laguna Phuket joined forces with the Thanyapura Sports and Leisure Club at Phuket International Academy (PIA) and visiting Hong Kong triathlon club The Tritons to launch a survival swimming programme for children from Laguna’s Developing Sustainable Schools community initiative.
The Tritons volunteered time during a recent weekend triathlon training camp in Phuket to stage the swimming session at the PIA Aquatic Centre for a group of 5th-6th Grade students from Baan Jao Krua School in Phang Nga Province, Laguna Phuket’s current school charity partner.
With Thai Health Authority statistics showing drowning as the highest cause of death for Thai children under the age of 15*, teaching children to be competent in deep water with the ability to get to safety is a major priority for coastal regions.
The Tritons, veterans of the Laguna Phuket Triathlon, have embraced the destination resort’s community efforts, last year donating a total of THB 300,000 to Baan Jao Krua School. They will continue this support in 2011 with further involvement in Laguna’s swimming programme.
Tritons’ senior coach Annemarie Munk said: “We all love coming to train and compete in Phuket and wanted to give something back to the local community, which always makes us so welcome.”
Laguna Phuket will be working with The Tritons and local partners throughout 2011 to promote greater awareness of basic swimming and the dangers of water throughout the young community of Phuket.
Suthasinee Rukmit, Laguna’ Director of Community Relations, said: “We’re very grateful to The Tritons for providing this valuable session for the children, and to PIA for the use of their Aquatic Centre. This has been a great start to our 2011 programme.”
