Laguna Phuket Sojourn For Mercedes-Benz Masters Thailand

Media Release

The Mercedes-Benz Masters Thailand will head to the exotic island of Phuket this year and be played at the Laguna Phuket Golf Club from June 2 to 5.

The US$60,000 tournament will be the fourth event on this season’s 10-leg Mercedes-Benz Tour and promises to attract the rising stars of golf in Southeast Asia.

The Mercedes-Benz Tour has always ensured it stages tournaments at premier venues in the region and Laguna Phuket is one of the finest, having hosted last year’s Singha Thailand Open.

“There will definitely be an added buzz with the Mercedes-Benz Masters Thailand heading to Laguna Phuket Golf Club - a holiday retreat where the players will enjoy competing and also tourists can come and watch the action,” said Dr. Alexander Paufler, President and CEO, Mercedes-Benz Thailand Limited..

The Mercedes-Benz Masters Thailand was last played in 2008 when it was the season-ending Tour Championship. Malaysian Danny Chia took the title.

“The Mercedes-Benz Tour is well and truly underway this year and has seen some wonderful golf being played. Mercedes-Benz Thailand is therefore really looking forward to the circuit’s arrival in the Kingdom,” added Dr Paufler.

Filipino Artemio Murakami claimed the season-opening Mercedes-Benz Masters Philippines last month, while Udorn Duangdecha from Thailand was triumphant in the Singha Pattaya Open.

Thailand’s Thanyakon Khrongpha won the Kariza Indonesia Championship in Jakarta three weeks ago.
A full-field of 144 players will compete in the Mercedes-Benz Masters Thailand, where the winner will earn a cheque for US$9,750.

Thailand’s many talented young professionals who have been such a dominant force on the Mercedes-Benz Tour will all compete including Namchok Tantipokhakul, Wisut Artjanwant, and Kwanchai Tannin.

Namchok won twice on the Mercedes-Benz Tour last year on his way to claiming the Mercedes-Benz Tour Order of Merit. He therefore recently became the first player to benefit from a new opportunity whereby seven players from the Mercedes-Benz Tour earn berths in this year’s Barclays Singapore Open.

These slots were allocated to last year’s number one ranked player and the top six from this year’s Merit list.
In addition a wealth of players will compete from across the ASEAN region in particular with strong contingents from Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Singapore.
