Laguna Phuket Will Host its 16th Sea Turtle Release Ceremony 2009
In an ongoing effort to help protect Thailand’s endangered sea turtles, Laguna Phuket, will once again host their ‘Sea Turtle Release Ceremony’ on Friday 3 April from 4-6pm at the Sheraton Grande Laguna beachfront. The Governor of Phuket will preside over the ceremony and Miss Thailand Universe 2009 has also been invited to attend.
This year’s event aims to raise enough money to sponsor three satellite tracking devices for young turtles that will be released into the Indian Ocean post event and also to support the turtle conservation and rehabilitation projects of the Phuket Marine Biological Centre and Royal Thai Navy.
The fundraising activities include a silent auction and raffle to win a turtle to release at an exclusive sea turtle release which will happen between 7.30-9pm on the beachfront next to Banyan Tree Phuket. Michael Ayling, managing director of Laguna Resorts & Hotels Plc says “A separated release event will take place this year to ensure maximum comfort for the turtles, whilst retaining Laguna Phuket’s long established environmental awareness activities”. Other family activities scheduled for the event include a turtle sand sculpture competition, various games; turtle cake decorating, arts and crafts, a sea turtle conservation exhibition and much more.
Silent auction and raffle tickets are available at all Laguna Phuket reception desks from 1 April 2009 until midday on the day of the event, and will later be available at the event itself until 5pm. This event is run in association with the Phuket Province, Phuket Marine Biological Centre and the Third Naval Area Command, Royal Thai Navy.
