Laguna Phuket to host Singha Thailand Golf Open 2009
After a three season absence the Thailand Open, one of the region’s most revered golf tournaments, returns to the Asian Tour and the island of Phuket. The 2009 tournament will be staged at the Laguna Phuket Golf Club from 5-8 March, the latest in a series of world-class sporting events held at the integrated resort complex. The last contested Thailand Open in 2005, was also held in Phuket.
The Open, first held in 1965, was an annual fixture on the Asian Tour until 2005 when a lack of sponsorship caused the tournament to be placed on hold. The signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Thailand Golf Association and World Sport Group has breathed new life into the event. The forty year history of the event has seen two Thai winners. Most recently in 2004 when Boonchu Ruangkit won the title to repeat his 1992 victory. With repeated success in hosting international events, Laguna Phuket is understandably excited about the prospects of hosting another major sporting competition. Tim Haddon, Director of Golf at Laguna Phuket Golf Club said, “With a US$500,000 prize purse, the event will attract a full field of quality Professionals from all over the region and internationally. We hope to also see a considerable number of golf enthusiasts coming along to watch some of the action.”
“This event will generate a great deal of fantastic media exposure for Phuket both internationally and nationally with the last two days of play televised live across the region. It’s fair to say that we are very excited to have this event here.” he added.
