World Triathlon Corporation (WTC) and Laguna Resorts & Hotels have announced the next Ironman 70.3 Laguna Phuket to be held on December 2, 2012. The race, set at Laguna Phuket Resort in Thailand, will be the culmination of WTC's new Asia-Pacific Ironman 70.3 Event Series. The Laguna Phuket Resort is expected to be the permanent home of this Championship.

Ironman is triathlon’s marquee challenge and the world’s most captivating and testing single day endurance race consisting of a 3.8km swim, a 180km cycle and a 42.2km run. Ironman has been a respected name in triathlon since its inception 32 years ago and is regarded as the pinnacle of the sport.

In addition to full distance Ironman races, in 2006, the World Triathlon Corporation launched a new World Championship Ironman Triathlon Series – Ironman 70.3. The introduction of Ironman 70.3 acknowledges the popularity of half Ironman triathlon distance racing across the world. This distance, consisting of a 1.9km swim, a 90.1km bike and a 21.1km run is perceived as being far more attainable and attractive than the ‘full’ Ironman distance. The athletes cover 112.9km – the equivalent of 70.3 miles. For most athletes, the goal, the drive, the inspiration is to hear the race announcer proclaim “You are an Ironman!” as they cross the finish line.

The Asia-Pacific Championship race will incorporate the Laguna Phuket Triathlon's trademark two-bodies of water swim course including a section in the Andaman Sea, a beach run-over and a section in a lagoon. The bike course will be challenging and spectacular with hilly sections and winding rural roads through rubber plantations and villages. The two-loop flat run will include Resort roads, paved paths and grass golf-course sections.

The Championship will be held a week after the Laguna Phuket Triathlon, one of the most popular destination races of all time. Over the years, this race has attracted many of the sport's top stars such as Mark Allen, Paula Newby-Fraser, Craig Alexander and Samantha McGlone, who have routinely listed Laguna Phuket as a favourite race due to its venue, organization and tourism experience.

Ironman 70.3 Laguna Phuket Testimonials

Thank you for all the efforts in putting this event on. The experience that has been gained over many years running the Laguna Phuket Triathlon was very evident and this was certainly one of the best organised races I have ever taken part in. Great job.

- Craig Jordan

Will definitely be back next year & have convinced a few club members from home to join me (they don't believe me about the hills). Thanks for an awesome, if not hard, day. Also thank the Thai people -- they were the best crowd ever.

- Gary Pearce

I thoroughly enjoyed the 70.3 Asia Championship in Phuket. Particularly the bike course; it was very unique and really separated the men from the boys...I loved it! The overall organisation was great and the friendliness of all the helping hands on and off the course was just amazing. I would recommend the race to anybody and I have already made many positive remarks to my friends.

- Hermann Hefti

I have been doing triathlon for almost 20 years all over the world and taken part in the LPT race 6 times. After a race like this, the key question for me to ask myself is, "would I recommend this race to my friends?" The answer is a resounding "Yes!"

- Sam Pritchard

At Phuket 70.3, you can hold your head high- truly one of the toughest, most honest courses I have ever done in my 20 years of triathlon. Fantastic race, fabulous event…definitely worthy of Championship status!

- Belinda Granger

Whether you prefer the WTC's Ironman 70.3 Laguna Phuket or the classic (and shorter) Laguna Phuket Triathlon, it's hard not to choose Laguna Phuket, Thailand, as our No. 1 luxury race destination.
